Best Grail EDC - Love It More Daily

The first thing that struck me was the overall build quality. It’s like a Porsche of pens. Maybe if the 959 were being built today with the spirit of the endeavor intact. Initial writing impressions, coming from the Pelikan m809 struck me as a little stiff, but after writing for a while, I began to appreciate the control of this particular level of fine bounce. I have large hands on the smaller side of large, bigger than medium and this pen just fits better and better. I appreciate the thickness and variety of grip options when drawing.

The Vac fill is super satisfying! I have one other: Asvine v126. I’d say that one is good for the price, but not like this. I use the bottom ink window more than I expected. It’s an excellent feature. I always know when I need to vent the top. Lovely. Thoughtful! Engineering excellence! All of it conveys high quality through the senses, in the smoothness of my medium nib, the accuracy, consistent ink flow, cap screw mechanism, vac fill mechanism, fine texture on the grip, the quote on the end ring by the Vac Fill. Nothing wobbles. All of it feels tight, well made, built to last and I love writing with it every single day. I use my Pelikan for journal headline and then my Gravitas for the body copy. Sooo satisfying with Kon Peki ink. Thanks for the EXCELLENT product. I absolutely love using it! Can’t recommend it any more.

Amazing!

I have owned the Ultemate Vac for a few months and it’s a wonderful pen. I love the craftsmanship and ingenuity shown in Gravitas pens so when I saw the release of the v 2.0 I immediately jumped on board. It is a better pen in many ways especially in the metal on metal threads on the filling system and the filling system itself. The new nib is great and very smooth and the feed keeps up with “fast” writing. The balance is perfect.

I also own the pultruded carbon, piston filled pen and it has its own innovative features. I’d love to see the vac 2.0 version with a titanium filler knob and section and a titanium cap with a threaded delrin insert. The perfect pen!

One of the Best that I have seen recently

The Vac 2.0 is the most precisely manufactured pens that I own, and I have a lot of great pens. It is a pleasure to own and a flawless writer. The look and feel of this pen are fantastic for my hand. The size is perfect. Not too small and not too big, yet it holds more than enough ink. I really appreciate the ink window on the section. While it does post, I find that it does not post in the most secure manner. The black aluminum and yellow Ultemate look great together. I highly recommend this pen.

Vac 2.0 super FP

Ordering and delivery were hassle-free, and the delivery was very fast. The Vac 2.0 is a great fountain pen. It writes very well—with a rich, wet flow—yet is still practical for everyday use. A truly great companion for everyday life. I highly recommend it.

An Exceptional Writing Experience from a Maker Who Clearly Loves Fine Engineering

I purchased the black aluminum and Ultem version of the Gravitas Vac 2.0 with a fine nib, and overall, this pen is easily a 5-star experience for me. I genuinely love it.

From the moment I inked it up, the pen made a strong impression. I filled it with Organic Studios Nitrogen Royal Blue, and the Kraken filling system was incredibly intuitive to use. On my very first attempt, I was able to get the pen nearly completely filled, which says a lot about how approachable and well-designed the mechanism is. The ink capacity is also excellent — this pen holds a large volume of ink, which is a real advantage if you write frequently or simply do not want to think about refilling every few days.

Design-wise, the Gravitas Vac 2.0 is beautiful. The combination of black aluminum and Ultem gives it a distinctive, modern, and purposeful look without feeling flashy. It feels fantastic in the hand: substantial enough to feel premium and grounded, but not so heavy that the weight becomes distracting. The balance worked very well for me, and the overall feel of the pen communicates the kind of careful machining and engineering that Gravitas is known for.

One detail I especially appreciate is the stainless steel grip section. It has micro-knurling machined into it, and the result is excellent. The section never feels slippery, even during longer writing sessions, but it also does not feel abrasive or uncomfortable. It is a practical design choice that also adds to the pen’s overall industrial elegance.

The writing experience is where this pen really shines. The fine nib is silky smooth and glides across the page beautifully. With the Organic Studios Nitrogen Royal Blue, the pen writes juicy, controlled, and expressive, with just the right amount of feedback. The sound on paper is also extremely satisfying — not scratchy, not muted, but the perfect kind of audio feedback that makes writing feel tactile and intentional. At times, it almost feels like writing on glass. The nib also has what I would describe as the perfect amount of bounce: enough to give the writing experience character and comfort, but not so much that it feels soft or imprecise.

The packaging was also excellent. The pen arrived in a custom case with a lined bed and a restraining strap to keep it from shifting around during shipping. It made for a great opening experience, and the pen was nestled securely and presented beautifully. One small note: if you push the pen too far down into the hollowed-out cavity of the case, it can get a little stuck and may be hard to dislodge. It is not a major issue, but it is worth being aware of.

My only real complaint is the lack of a clip. I understand that the designer has said clips are not something they personally enjoy, and I respect that design preference. Still, from a practical standpoint, I would love to see either an optional cap with a clip or an add-on clip similar to what Kaweco offers. For a pen this good, having a clip option would make it even easier to carry and use every day.

Even with that small caveat, I would enthusiastically recommend the
Gravitas Vac 2.0 to anyone looking for a fountain pen made by someone who clearly has a deep love for fine engineering and an understanding of what makes a writing instrument special. I have written with luxury pens that sell for three or four times as much, and the Gravitas holds up in every way that matters. It delivers a premium feel, a beautiful design, an impressive filling system, and one of the best writing experiences I have had.

It may be a bit heavy for some users, especially in heavier materials — my buddy’s titanium version adds even more weight — but the black aluminum and Ultem version fits me very well. For my preferences, the weight, balance, grip, nib feel, and ink capacity all come together beautifully.

In short: this is a thoughtfully engineered, beautifully made, extremely enjoyable fountain pen. I really do love it.

what a great pen it is!

wow! i have a couple Sentry pens but had held off on getting one of the earlier vac models -- at great duress to my self-control may i say! -- but when i watched the reviews for this one i knew the time had arrived. and what a great pen it is! super comfy, nice girthy section with milling to provide a 100% non-slip grip, super smooth vac mechanism that sucks up a seriously big gulp of ink, VERY nice new Gravitas nib (both smooth and every so slightly toothy at the same time!?!), looks fab and while not cheap it's not breaking the bank either. i'm struggling to think what boxes were not ticked here and i got nothing. worth every penny IMO.

Best of but worlds

This is an amazing pen. The perfect hybrid between the Monster and the Ultemate Vac. The new nib is so smooth and with a little bounce, it reminded me of an 18k Pilot nib.

My only issue was the cap works itself loose if I don't close it particularly tightly.

My admiration for the Gravitas Vac 2.0

I've received a few emails prompting a review, and I do have good things to say about the pen, but I'm only coming here after watching SBREBrowns' latest review on the pen. Particularly the comments section where people were complaining about some features.

I personally really enjoy the pen. Unlike others, I have not experienced any issues with the build quality, capping works well, knob at the end of the pen also works fine, I don't post my pens so thats not an issue. Just wanted to assure you that there are some users who do enjoy the product very much!

I'm an industrial designer as well and I do appreciate the material choice. Even though we don't need the strength of ultem, I like ultem pens because I can use more pigmented inks without fear of staining like in some acrylic pens. I bought the aluminium version just days before the titanium version came out (would have probably gone for that initially) but I think the alu version is a nice weight for me (I checked that titanium version was heavier) so overall quite pleased even despite just "missing out" on the titanium versions. Operation and filling was smooth, I've used many vac filling systems before but this one definitely fills more on a single plunge.

From a design perspective, ergonomics is fine, the grooves on the grip section are comfortable though I am irrationally afraid of wearing that down eventually. I appreciate being able to take the section off for easy cleaning, and also a very neat looking window for the second reservoir that reminds me of aurora optimas/88s or twsbi classic pens, very cool! One minor aesthetic thing that I think might just be a personal preference, I would have preferred it such that end of the cap was extended to meet the clear ultem part of the body, instead of ending short and showing a bit of the aluminium part of the body. But this is a really small aesthetic detail and I understand there were probably some design constraints there, and also purely subjective.

My first Gravitas pen but I am happy to have picked one up, I'm clearing a lot of my pens but I think this will stay as a nice user. pen!

Appreciate the work put into this design, it is a really functional tool that's been working great for me, not sure why others are complaining so much.

As an Industrial designer, I'm happy that the product design and manufacturing is something that Gravitas continues to pursue. Where I'm from design is shifting a lot to digital products or UI/UX, schools barely focus on teaching much physical making or manufacturing anymore. It's inspiring to see you guys chase your passion and continue making things in todays world!

This is not my first Gravitas

This is not my first Gravitas. It's not even my first vacuum filler. It is my first VAC 2.0 with the #6 black steel nib in extra fine and excellent proportions for my hand. It is very well designed, built to last and the nib writes very smoothly and consistently. I thought I would not like the altem yellow barrel, but with a full tank of ink, it is not even noticeable. This pen draws in a ton of ink with just a single down stroke. With a single fill, you can write for ages. The VAC 2.0 is an outstanding fountain pen and inexpensive enough to add to every collection.

Smoothest

I consider the carbon piston as the smoothest writer in my Gravitas set but after using the Vac 2.0, I have to give it to new nib. It is literally gliding over the paper when writing that how smooth it is. Plus a large ink capacity.

A very solid pen, an interesting filling system.

A very solid pen, an interesting filling system, and a good writer. I chose it to travel with and it feels as if it will be a perfect writing companion with a large ink capacity. I chose a fine nib but shall get a spare extra fine as the fine is a little on the medium side for me. I may even get a second one for writing with at home.

Gravitas: minimalist art as a daily companion.

Gravitas Black Aluminum Vac 2.0 was a no‑brainer for me.
I’d been eyeing the Vac 1.0 for a while, but the Kraken filling system, the proprietary nib, and that engraved message on the ring — like a covenant whispered between me and Gravitas — sealed the deal. I’m still in awe of those mysterious words with their unbeatable allure.

Gravitas has very quickly become one of my favourites. It writes beautifully smooth, and Ben included a state‑of‑the‑art case, so I carry it in my bag full of chaos without a single worry. I inked it with Iroshizuku Kon‑Peki, and I should mention: I went for the Broad nib.

The rest I’ll leave to your imagination — and in this case, envy is absolutely welcome.

For me, this is the ideal travel/EDC pen

I would like to revise my review.

After contacting customer service, I am now also able to fill the Vac 2.0 effortlessly on the very first attempt, reaching a fill level of 4/5.
For me, this is the ideal travel/EDC pen: large ink capacity, an excellent-writing EF nib, and superb build quality. Thank you, Gravitas!

At Most Half a Fill

I have extensive experience with fountain pens—including those with vacuum-filling systems—but with this particular pen, contrary to how it is advertised, I am unfortunately able to achieve a fill of at most only half capacity. I also own the "Ultimate Vac" (the previous model), with which I can achieve a nearly complete fill using a little trick. However, this trick no longer works on the "Vac 2.0." For me, the upgrade was not worth it.

What makes Vac 2 worth the upgrade?

What makes Vac 2.0 better than the original version? The two biggest features are the new filling mechanism and the new house designed nib. The nib is a significant improvement in that a medium doesn't have the stroke width of a standard broad or bold nib. The filling mechanism is noticeably refined. It's much easier getting a complete fill with the V2.0 mechanism. My only critique is the lack of color selections. I've heard that different colors are coming!

May wish to update the Q&A answer to my earlier question before it affects sales. :P You can screw in a Jowo #6 with housing, assuming standard/same housing. Screwed mine in - no mods, just tight.

Gravitas Pens

Yes - our proprietary nib is made to fit the standard we use on Gravitas pens also from prior.

W
Willie

How do I replace the nib with a Jowo nib? The housing doesn't go in, so I guess I pull out the Gravitas nib but keep the feed, and put in the replacement Jowo nib without its housing yeah?

Gravitas Pens

The nib on the Vac2.0 is proprietary to us - shape/size/thickness/mounting prongs (nib/feeder/housing - all custom) it wont take the Jowo steel nib or any other nib on the feeder.
